An soaring overview of the company's long and storied history.
Boeing is the largest aircraft manufacturer in the world, and has been around in some form for more than a century. But there's a lot you don't know about the maker of the 747 and countless military airplanes. This video from Business Casual details the extensive history of the massive company:
The company that would become known Boeing was founded by entrepreneur William Boeing in 1916, during the height of WWI, in collaboration with George Westervelt. The two made their first breakthrough selling planes to the military.
During WWII, Boeing developed the famous B-17 Flying Fortress, the largest bomber aircraft in the world. A few years later it built the even larger B-29 Superfortress, the plane that dropped the atomic bomb.
Today, Boeing is heavily involved in the space industry, manufacturing most of the U.S. modules for the International Space Station. It also receives multiple contracts from NASA in addition to its many military and defense contracts. While Boeing is now heavily involved in more areas than ever before, it is also facing heavy competition from rival companies SpaceX and Airbus, both in the air and off the planet.
